When should I have my wisdom teeth pulled?
Wisdom teeth usually come through around age 20. In some cases, however, they remain (partially) under the gums. This is not necessarily a problem, but it can lead to complications such as:
- Lack of space in the jaw: Wisdom teeth can push other teeth aside, causing pain or misalignment.
- Inflammation: Wisdom teeth that do not erupt properly can cause gingivitis.
- Tooth decay: Because wisdom teeth are difficult to clean, plaque and tooth decay develop more quickly.
During a checkup, your dentist will assess whether it is necessary to remove your wisdom teeth. In doing so, we take into account your specific situation and any complaints.
Who removes wisdom teeth?
In most cases, the dentist can often pull your wisdom teeth himself. The treatment method depends on the location of the molar and the complexity of the procedure:
- Pulling by the dentist: If the wisdom tooth is easy to remove, the dentist can perform it himself under local anesthesia.
- Surgical removal by an oral surgeon: When the wisdom tooth is difficult to reach or is partially under the gums, we refer you to an oral surgeon. This procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia.
Recovery after wisdom tooth extraction
After having your wisdom teeth removed, you may experience pain or swelling for a few days. On average, recovery takes 5 to 7 days. Here are some tips to help the healing process:
- Do not rinse your mouth for the first 24 hours.
- Eat soft foods, such as soup, yogurt or mashed potatoes.
- After 24 hours, brush your teeth three times daily with a soft toothbrush.
- Avoid smoking and alcohol so as not to slow down the healing process.
- Do not do any strenuous physical activity for 2-3 days.
At the time of surgery, we will provide you with a clear aftercare plan and a prescription for pain medication or anti-inflammatories if necessary.
Cost and reimbursement of wisdom tooth extraction
The cost of pulling a wisdom tooth depends on the complexity of the treatment, the method chosen and your health insurance. In the case of removal by an oral surgeon, in most cases the costs are covered under the basic insurance.
To avoid surprises, we recommend checking in advance what costs your health insurance company covers and whether your deductible applies. Our team will be happy to help you obtain the necessary information.
